If you’re anything like me, your hyper-concerned about your health with a borderline obsession with food labels. Last year, for instance, I went off all artificial sweeteners, meaning that if the packaging says “Sugar free,” tetleyinfusion.jpg“Light,” or “Diet,” I’m over it, namely due to long-term neurological concerns.

The truth is, we all know the dangers of aspartame and other low-calorie sweeteners. And you could be fooling yourself if you think Splenda, aka sucralose, is any better than its to-good-to-be-true counterparts. In my experience, nothing satisfies like the real thing without some kind of drawback. Google “the dangers of Splenda” and you’ll quickly find yourself reconsidering that mid-afternoon Diet Coke.

brand2023.jpgAs many artificial sweeteners are also known to stimulate appetite, I’ve sought some alternatives, specifically, stevia, agave and cane sugar. Replacing a moderate Crystal Light habit of years past, I’ve recently developed a fondness for Tetley Infusions liquid tea mix.

Available in naturally cane-sweetened Green Tea, Green Tea with Pomegranate, Classic Tea with Mediterranean Lemon, and White Tea with Blueberry, each single-serving sachet combines effortlessly with water almost instantly. No frantic shaking leading to spillage. No DDT-like aftertaste.

At only 50 calories a serving, I’m adding a dash of this readymade iced tea to everything from tap water and sparkling water to recipes as a substitute for heavy sugars and sweeteners (Green Tea and Chilled Mango Soup is a 20090602-tet2_800.jpghousehold favourite in my parts, but see www.tetley.ca for additional suggestions).

One box of six 30 ml sachets retails for $3.99. Look for them at your local market in the non-life threatening flavour crystal aisle.

I only recently came into the pleasure of dry-hand syndrome and it’s theOlay.jpg antithesis of pretty. I’m sure people really appreciate it when you introduce yourself with lizard fingers. Even the manicurists point, laugh and whisper. I actually had a friend with the chronic dry paw test drive  Olay's Quench Therapy Hand Cream and it wasn’t until I saw the results of sebum-regulating vitamin B5, circulation booster B3 and antioxidant healer E that I decided to give it the old college try. Not only is it soothing on impact, my hands felt markedly better after about three days. Forget college. I’m taking this thing to grad school. www.olay.ca

I’m always thrilled when a new hair product happens upon my doorstep. Dye is a particular favourite. I don’t actually colour my hair, but it gives me a chance to test products on willing subjects with immediate results. Hair dye is always a terrifying ground to cover. I’m always teeming with anticipation, excitement and confidence when a friend is willing to brave the basin that is my bathroom shower in the name of science. Still, no matter how much faith I have in a product, there’s always that hint of crippling fear going through my mind when the time comes to rinse. garnierHerbashine.jpg

Fortunately, Garnier’s new HerbaShine formula with a bamboo extract fortifying treatment did exactly as it promised: imparted a natural colour boost without the use of ammonia in 10 minutes. And, I never imagined myself speaking this way about hair dye, but the scent was a mélange of HERBASHINE_BENEFITS_visuel.jpgfloral and fruit notes with a wood base. Certainly not your mama's hair dye. I’m also pleased to report that it covers 70 per cent of hairs lacking pigment (we don’t say the “g” word in these parts).

Touted for its resilience and resistance to vertical pressure, bamboo extract seems to be the ideal antidote to harsh chemicals that leave the hair dry and difficult to manage. When the product was really put to the test with regular washing and styling, the high sheen and deep-conditioned feeling stayed put for about six weeks. Hey, if Bar Rafaeli's using it, I'm game. (BTW: That's her in the pic, not me.) $10.49

Although the birth of TV dinners was in 1954 when televisions still wore tinfoil antennae, I kind of like them. There’s a reason Swanson sold tens of millions of single-serving platters in their first year. In spite of abhorrent sodium levels and often-diminutive portion sizes, I’ve been known to dabble in the Lean Cuisine Panini section. I know that fatal practice is glaringly hypocritical in light of my usual rants against all things artificial, but hey, a girl’s gotta eat.

Grace Upstairs.jpgIn keeping with the recent sanctity of affordable dining, Grace Upstairs, the informal, second-level counterpart to Toronto’s Grace Restaurant, has declared a retro renaissance with the introduction of TV Dinner Thursdays. Beginning today, the restaurant will offer a one-course meal, which Chef Dustin Gallagher guarantees will be devoid of anything instant or frozen.

Owner and sommelier Lesle Gibson, who launched LA hotspots like Bella and Shag, has worked with A-listers Brad Pitt, Justin Timberlake, Janet Jackson, John Mayer and Matthew McConaughey. And now she’s graced us mortals with a quick-fix menu that includes a main meat or fish entrée, a pile of fresh organic veggies, a side of potato or corn bread and a dessert. At just 20 bucks a pop, a full dinner and dessert go down more like a celeb-worthy platter than a TV tray. (503 College St.; 416.944.888; www.gracerestaurant.ca)

I am a woman of convenience. I insist on side streets and shop online; I take Internet banking very seriously and subsist on readymade meals. Interestingly, my grooming routine doesn’t following the same trajectory. I cleanse, tone, moisturize, use a separate makeup remover for my eyes… You name it, I do it.

Having the products out and ready to go on my vanity is one thing. But when I started traveling for work and heading north most weekends, I was finding the packing process arduous, especially when it came to cosmetics. I tried the toiletry route. But it ended up warranting an additional piece of luggage. And then there’s airport security and the advent of size constraints and Ziploc bags. What Security Sam is doing with my Nars Sheer Matte Concealer and Boots Expert Exfoliating Mitts is beyond me.

In the name of routine and habit, I began seriously considering a life as a recluse. Then came an onslaught of convenience cleansing wipes that – you got it – cleanse, tone and remove even the most die-hard makeup—in one step! The first few trial products were in vain. Hives, sticky cheeks, itchy eyes, raccoon circles.Kaia.JPG

On the verge of throwing in the towel, as luck would have it, a very dear friend and colleague of mine introduced me to Kaia Naturals Bamboo Facial Cleansing Cloths, inspired by a sustainable clothing designer. She explained that not only does bamboo renew itself in three to four years versus 70 (the norm for most trees), it’s naturally antimicrobial as well. Also, while the company’s contemporaries are made from wood fibres, which can irritate the skin, this disposable, alcohol-free, this hypoallergenic alternative is suitable for even the most temperamental skin. Believe me. I would know. Plus, the packaging is made of recyclable plastic.

Looking forward to taking them on the road for a virtuous cleanse and velvety finish on the go. Just need a destination…

Available at stores across North America. $17.99 for a package of 30 cloths; www.kaianaturals.com

Missing the holidays and that seven-day getaway to an exotic paradise that is now no more than a fleeting memory? Laura Goldstein, the creative gem behind BC-based mashu mashu (translated as “Wow, that’s something! in Hebrew), has proven successful of bringing the sand and sea into the present with her 2010 Resort Spring collection. n182.jpg

At various magazines in the past, I’ve had the opportunity to experience Goldstein’s work firsthand and it’s the kind of craftsmanship that makes its wearer feel good. It’s bold, real and cheerful. Best of all, without shying away from colour and detail, the pieces always exemplify their theme. This time around, Rock Star, a part of the collection combines natural agate slices, gold plate enamel starfish with Swarovski crystal centres and freshwater pearls. The Botanical Garden Butterfly pieces are hand-cast with stones like lapis, turquoise, kyanite, amethyst, chalcedony and blue quartz along with pearls and gold plate floral toggles.

n189_2.jpgI know, I know. Spring is slightly further than just around the corner, but when I looked at this collection in particular, it was like I was on a beach, checking out the wares of some exotic local jewelry designer. The kind you say, “Man, Canadians would eat this up!” about. And then I crank up my oven to get more heat circulating throughout my home.

Love the social circle but hate the dark circles? Sometimes being the life of the party can quickly morph you into the living dead. Fortunately, beauty maven Elizabeth Grant – a favourite amog the likes of celebs like Blake Lively and J-Lo – has heard our calls, responding with The Socializer Bright Lights for the morning after and The Socializer Late Nights, its PM counterpart. Socialize_2product-01.jpg

Both are packed with the hydrating, cooling, de-puffing, dark-circle-erasing, illuminating action of Ulva Lactuca, an algae that supports elasticity; collagen-boosting Matrixyl; anti-irritant allantoin; and soothing chamomile.

blake-lively.jpgDon't let a glam lifestyle cheat you out of a youthful glow. Make like a gossip and dispose of all incriminating evidence by following this simple application process: Post-cleanse, simply apply two clicks to the under eye area and gently massage in. $40, www.elizabethgrant.com

If you’re looking to melt away some stress without the whopping price tag, try the ObusForme Shiatsu Massaging Cushion with Heat. Hands down, it’s the best thing you can do for your back and moneymaker between visits to the spa. ObusForme Shiatsu Massaging Cushion with Heat.jpg

I know I always talk about seeking the full-body benefits of a massage therapist on a regular basis. The problem is that when it comes to “regular,” the most I can sustain is the non-negotiable imposition of Mother Nature. Even my aesthetician, hair stylist and trainer wouldn’t dare ask me to consider a standing appointment.

I’m all about the “I know it’s last minute, but…” spiel, which is why I go into raptures of delight when a company like ObusForme develops a product that saves me from having to make a phone call—let alone leave my house!

All I have to do is strap my take-home therapist to a chair, have a seat and relax as the intense kneading rollers target the deep tissues of my upper, middle and lower back. The combination of massage and heat immediately got me tingling and I’ve found that regular trips to the chair have made marked progress in countering what can only be described as hunched-over-writer chic.

At $119.99, the Shiatsu Massaging Cushion with Heat is a great little investment for your body—without the awkward conversation. Available at Shoppers Drug Mart, Zellers and Jean Coutu.
